Web Security in the Age of AI: Why Website Protection Must Change
Artificial intelligence is transforming the way we work, communicate and build online services. Unfortunately, it is also helping cybercriminals operate faster, automate more tasks and target considerably more websites.
AI has not created an entirely new type of cyberattack. Instead, it is making familiar threats more efficient. Criminals can use automated tools to identify vulnerable software, test stolen passwords, produce convincing phishing messages and scan thousands of websites in a very short period.
Recent Falcon Digital monitoring has recorded periods in which our wider server group received more than one million suspicious or hostile automated requests and probes within a single hour.
This does not mean that one million websites were compromised or that one million individual attackers were involved. Most of this activity consists of automated bots repeatedly testing websites for weaknesses—and the overwhelming majority is successfully blocked.
Websites are no longer static
Modern websites are made up of many interconnected systems, including:
- Website hosting and server software
- WordPress or another content-management system
- Themes, plugins and third-party applications
- Administrator and customer accounts
- Contact forms, booking systems and payment platforms
- Domain names, DNS services and security certificates
- Analytics, email and marketing integrations
A weakness in any one of these areas can potentially provide an attacker with an opportunity.
This is why website maintenance can no longer consist of occasionally logging in and installing a few updates. Websites must now be treated as continuously changing digital services that require active monitoring, protection and maintenance.
How hosting and maintenance are changing
To respond to this changing environment, Falcon Digital is introducing a more centralised website management and security approach.
The new system is designed to provide:
- Faster identification of relevant vulnerabilities
- Automated handling of suitable critical security updates
- Improved website and uptime monitoring
- Stronger protection against automated and abusive traffic
- Better visibility of suspicious files and website changes
- More coordinated maintenance across the websites we manage
- Improved incident investigation and recovery processes
No responsible provider can guarantee that a website will never be attacked or compromised. Our role is to reduce the likelihood of a successful attack, detect unusual activity sooner, limit any potential damage and maintain a reliable recovery route.
What clients can do
Most clients do not need to become cybersecurity specialists. A few sensible steps can still make a significant difference:
- Use multi-factor authentication wherever it is available.
- Use strong, unique passwords for every account.
- Remove access when a member of staff or supplier leaves.
- Speak to us before installing new plugins or integrations.
- Report unexpected redirects, warnings, emails or website changes.
- Keep domain, billing and administrative contact details current.
Security works best as a partnership. Falcon Digital can protect and maintain the technical environment, while clients help by managing their users, accounts, data and third-party services carefully.
